For the times you want a burger without the meat
Eating wheat free means that you miss some of your old favourite, foods that remind you of special times like holidays or sitting on the grass near the water, enjoying time with family and friends, well for me that is hamburgers.
Like most people every now and again I have a craving for a good old fashioned hamburger, I know I can go and get one in a bun and I will feel a little lethargic for a few days and have to be strict on what I eat for the next week, or have the patty with salad on the plate. But sometimes you just want to pick it up and eat it, so instead of bread I use lettuce, this is not a new idea, however I am going to share my recipe for a homemade cheese hamburger.
You can add anything you like, if you love pineapple add it, if you feel like bacon add it, some other salad items I add depending on what the garden is producing or what’s in season are cucumber, tomatoes (I prefer the small ones) or avocado. You can also use field mushrooms as a bun.
My suggestion is to make the burger into something you like to satisfy that burger craving.
- 500g mince (I used beef)
- Small onion diced
- Pinch salt and pepper herb mix
- 1 tablespoon hazelnut meal (optional)
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 onion sliced
- Beetroot grated
- Carrot grated
- Sweet crunch lettuce (for the bun)
- Cheese (shredded 1 tablespoon each)
- Your choice of sauce
- form into four patties.
- Heat the pan over a medium heat, add the oil, then the onions (cook for about 2 mins). Add the patties about 6 mins, I did two mins each side them one, add a tablespoon of shredded cheese on the last turn.
- Place two pieces of lettuce, add the salad, then the patty top with sauce and onion.
